Description

An atmospheric watercolour painting by the British artist Joseph Pighills, depicting a view of the river Stour, which flows through Wiltshire and Dorset in southern England, and drains into the English Channel. Signed to the lower left-hand corner. There is a label on the reverse inscribed with the artist's name and title. Presented in a double card mount and in a silver effect frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including slight discolouration and very minor foxing. Some scratches to the frame.

Artist Biography

Joseph Pighills (1902-1984) was a painter and printmaker, born in Oxehope, near Keighley, where he lived for all his life. He worked as an engineering pattern maker until he took early retirement at 63 and began to paint seriously from the mid-1960's. A staunch chapel man, he had left school at 14, but always had a natural talent for art, which he developed at evening classes at the Keighley School of Art. Pighills held his first solo exhibition at Cliffe Castle Museum and Art Gallery, 1961. Examples of his work are in Leeds City Art Gallery and Bradford Art Gallery. Bradford Museums and Galleries held a commemorative exhibition of his work in 1985.
