Joseph Milner (1888-1969) - Early 20th Century Watercolour Labourers at Work

A very fine early 20th-century watercolour study by the British artist Joseph Milner. Here the artist has captured a busy work site with masses of men digging trenches and moving stones. Two foremen stand to the left of the group surveying their work. The artist has wonderfully captured the movement and light within this composition. Possibly an earlier sketch for a larger study. Fixed to the reverse of the frame are newspaper clippings from 1925 and exhibition information linked to other known works by Joseph Milner. Very well presented in a light wood frame and card mount. Signed. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good. There is some minor discolouration typical for a picture of this age but this is minor.

Artist Biography

Joseph Milner was a painter and printmaker born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire. Milner studied at the Manchester School of Art and during the period 1921-1938 he showed at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and Walker Art Gallery. A painting entitled 'Old Mill, Tongelré, Brabant' by Milner is illustrated in Artwork, June-August 1927. His death was recorded in Dawlish, Devon. He should not be confused with Joseph Milner Kite.
