Painter, born at Middlewich, Cheshire, who attended Liverpool College of Art, the Slade School, and furthered his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He exhibited at the RA from 1889 and also showed at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Liver Sketching Club, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Walker's Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, who elected him a member in 1897, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, who elected him in 1909. Throughout his working life, Swanwick was predominantly concerned with depicting bucolic life on the land, and most particularly the working horse. By 1909, he had moved to Sussex, where the South Downs provided a plentiful supply of working horse scenes; his harrowing and ploughing paintings of this period are well known. Swanwick married the artist Lilian Heatley, and he twice exhibited portraits of her at the RA, once in 1908 and secondly in 1926, his last exhibited picture. Examples of his work are in the collections of Gallery Oldham, National Museums Liverpool, Reading Art Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, and the York Museums Trust.
