The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. There is a slight closed tear to the upper edge. Good overall.

Joseph Greenup (1891-1946) was a painter, born at Caldbeck, Northumberland. When ten years of age, his family moved to Minworth, near Birmingham and in 1904, he enrolled at the Birmingham School of Art. In 1907, at the young age of fifteen, he won a scholarship to the RCA graduating in 1912. He later attended the RA Schools, leaving to join the army in 1915. Greenup saw active service throughout World War I and was commissioned as an Officer in the 12th London Regiment as an observer attached to the Royal Flying Corps.
During the 1920’s he earned a living as an illustrator, undertaking commissions for Pearsons Magazines and railway posters for LNER as well as illustrating 'Captain Blood'. He was a successful portrait painter, with commissions including a portrait of Princess Elizabeth in her Girl Guides uniform. During this period he was elected RP in 1933, RI in 1936 and RBA in 1945. His work was also exhibited at the RA and is in the collection of the NRM and the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate.
