Artist Biography

Hungarian born artist Imre Goth (1893-1982) lived in Berlin during the period of the Weimar Republic. Referred to as "The Golden Twenties,” this period saw healthy economic growth and a spurt in experimental and creative efforts. Goth benefitted from this, and was successful as a portrait artist. It was in this period that he was commissioned to paint the portrait of Hermann Goering - who would go on to be a leading figure in Nazi Germany. Goth's portrait of Goering was not flattering, and depicted him as a morphine addict. It is said that this was what would eventually lead Goth to flee to England, afraid for his life. He found refuge in England where he quickly re-established his career as a society portrait painter. He befriended film producer Alexander Korda, giving him an entry into the British showbiz world. He would go on to become particularly noted for his fashionable drawings of film stars.
