William Moore (1790-1851) was a portrait painter born in Birmingham. After working as a commercial designer, he turned his hand to portrait-painting. In this line he achieved some success and some repute in London. Eventually he settled at York, where he was also successful. He married twice, firstly to Martha Jackson and then to Sarah Collingham, and had fourteen children, several of whom also went on to be artists.
