Joseph Edward Southall - Original 1919 Graphite Drawing. In a double window mount. Monogrammed and Dated. There is a repaired 18cm tear down the right-hand side of the drawing, approximately 3cm in from the right edge.

Joseph Edward Southall RWS NEAC RBSA (1861–1944) was a leading figure in the 19th and early 20th-century revival of painting in tempera and leader of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen. A lifelong Quaker, Southall was an active socialist and pacifist, initially as a radical member the Liberal Party and later of the Independent Labour Party. Southall was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 1898 and Member in 1902. He became President of the Society in 1939 and stayed in this post until his death in 1944. The years before the outbreak of World War I saw Southall at the height of his achievement and fame. He worked on a series of large tempera paintings on mythological subjects that were widely exhibited across Europe and the United States. We have now been advised by a Southall expert that this is not by his hand, as he did not monogram works in this way.
