A charming turn-of-the-century military study by Joseph Bertrand, after a painting by Jacques de Lalaing (1858-1917). Executed with sweeping, painterly brushstrokes and a rich palette of browns and blues, the artist vividly captures the lively moment as a cavalry officer leads his men and their horses across a muddy landscape. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Some thinning to the canvas. Light discolouration to the varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age. Minor wear to the frame including small chips, and stable cracking. Overall the frame is in very good condition.
