A charming study of the dramatic landscape of Avon Gorge in Bristol. Figures in boats can be seen in the foreground, from which the artist draws the viewer's eye to the rocky cliff faces of the Gorge.
Inscribed verso on various old labels verso with biographical details on the artist and further old letters dated December 1892, pencil and watercolour with scratching out. The work is inscribed on an old letter from a Henry Browne dated 10th December 1892 giving details of the work as being a drawing of the River Avon by John Syer of Bath and certifying it to be a genuine work by the artist. Well presented in a gilt frame with ornate floral corner decoration. On paper.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. Light wear and stable cracking to the gilt frame.

Artist Biography
John Syer was a landscape painter, and the father of James Syer. He studied with J. Fisher, a miniaturist in Bristol and exhibited his works at the Royal Academy 1846 - 75, British Institute, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhere. He painted landscapes and coastal scenes with figures, often in Devon and Wales. His works hang in galleries in Bristol, Leeds, Leicester and Sheffield.
