This delightful watercolour study depicting the sweeping Cornish coastline near St. Ives. The artist uses gouache to highlight textural elements in the scene such as the tips of waves and the tall grass in the foreground. Signed twice to the lower left in ink and graphite. Well presented in a ornate glazed gilt frame with a white card mount. On paper.

Artist Biography

John Shapland (1865-1929) was a seascape artist from the South West of England, Many of his coastal scenes depict his beloved West country landscape, including views of Exmouth and Salcombe. Painting mainly in watercolours, Shapland was a successful painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon, and across America. He resided in Exeter.
