John Shapland (1865-1929) was a well known painter of seascapes and landscapes mainly in watercolour and gouache. Shapland exhibited at the RA entitled 'Fairy Led' and 'Paradise Lost'; his work was also shown in Paris and the USA. Shapland was the headmaster of the Exeter School of Art from 1899 to 1913, and at one time he was in business with the well known Devon artist W. H. Sweet.
