A charming gouache study depicting a mother and child looking up at Edinburgh from Princes Street Gardens. Inscribed with the artist's name and title on the original label verso. Presented in a wooden frame with a blue painted cove. On paper.

Condition

There is some light wear to the edges of the frame. The painting is in fine condition.

Artist Biography

John Semmence was a painter, born in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire. Semmence attended Gray's School of Art from 1949 to 1952, gaining a travelling scholarship to study in Europe. He travelled to France, residing in Paris for four years, returning to England in 1957. His first solo exhibition was staged at the Federation of British Artists, Suffolk Street, London, in 1965. He also exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, and with the NEAC at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, United Society of Artists, and the New English Art Club. His works have been purchased by the City of Edinburgh Council and Nuffield Foundation, while others are in private collections in France, Belgium, the United States of America, Australia, and the UK.
