Artist Biography
John Rathbone Harvey (1862-1933) was an English painter born in Solihull, Warwickshire. He received his artistic education at the Slade School of Fine Art during the 1880s, where he studied under the notable French-born professor Alphonse Legros, a respected figure known for his emphasis on drawing and classical techniques. Harvey was best known for his evocative rural landscapes, which he rendered in a bold, expressive style often characterised by heavy impasto. His work shows the clear influence of John Constable, particularly in the treatment of light, atmosphere, and the English countryside. Harvey was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 1902, and later became a full member in 1917. He was also actively involved in local artistic circles, notably as a member of both the Clarendon Art Fellowship and the Easel Club. While he exhibited only occasionally at the Royal Academy (RA), his work was respected for its technical skill and emotional resonance.
