Description

A very fine early 19th century watercolour study by the British artist John Nixon (1750-1818). The study depicts the capture of the notorious London 'Monster' who plagued the city in the 1790s. The culprit was eventually named as Rhynwick Williams and Nixon sketched his likeness at the trail in The Old Bailey. Williams was sentenced to 7 years in prison for attacking several ladies.

Nixon was known for landscapes, and for caricatures, some of which he etched himself. This particular study borrows similarities from the styles of Gillray and Cruikshank. The Monster is depicted begging on his knees while an angry-looking woman brandishes a large sword. A similarly angry-looking gentleman holds Williams by his hair and holds a very large stick.

Well presented in a birds-eye maple frame with white mount. Beneath the mount the study is titled 'The Monster Taken'. Signed and dated to the lower right corner.

On watermarked laid.

Condition

The condition is good for a picture of this age. There are signs of discolouration and very minor foxing. Closed tears to the edges of the paper and minor crease marks. Minor marks to the frame.

Size

45.7 x 60.9cm (18" x 24")
