A fine late 19th Century watercolour, showing a tender depiction of the Holy family. Jesus, as a child, holds his mother's hand as his father, Joseph, is seen busying himself in his woodworking shop in the background of the interior. The painting has been presented in a contemporary gilt frame with card mount. There is a label at the reverse with the artist's name and dates. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography

In 1871, Lawson was living in the St. Cuthberts area of Edinburgh, already married to Martha Lawson with four children (Elizabeth A., Martha L., Edwin I., William S.).
Described as an “artist and figure designer” in the 1881 census, Lawson had by now moved to 23 Glebe Place, Chelsea, where he lived with his wife and daughters Lizzie and Minnie.
In the 1891 and 1901 census records he was living in Fulham.
Usually given the dates “fl.1865-1909”, Lawson was an artist for young children, illustrating books of stories, nursery rhymes, poems and tales from the Bible.
