John James Barralet (1747 - 1815) was an Irish artist who spent the later part of his career in the United States. Born around 1747 in Dublin to a French family, at seventeen he enrolled in two classes at the Dublin Society of Drawing Schools, where he received a premium in 1764. Under the instruction of James Mannin, he was awarded prizes for both 'Drawing of human figures and heads' and 'Inventions in designs and patterns'. Barralet specialised in landscape painting, producing accomplished works noted for their lively figures, which gave an immediate, animated quality to his watercolours. His brothers included John Melchior Barralet, who taught at the Royal Academy in London beginning in 1770, and Joseph Barralet. In 1770, Barralet exhibited three landscapes at the Royal Academy and continued to exhibit there occasionally in subsequent years. During this period, he was also employed illustrating books on Irish antiquities. In June 1791, his drawings assisted Benjamin Simpson in winning a competition to design the gardens in Merrion Square. In 1795, Barralet emigrated to America, settling in Philadelphia, where he remained until his death in 1815.
