John Hall grew up in Cottingham, Hull. Showing a natural aptitude for drawing from an early age, his art training was interrupted by World War Two when he served in Ceylon. He subsequently trained at Hull College of Arts & Crafts before beginning his teaching career at the Cambridge School of Art in what is now Anglia Ruskin University.
John practiced as an artist, working mainly in oils. His favored subjects were landscapes, which he usually painted directly from life. He also painted flowers, still lives and portraits in the studio he built at his home in Linton. He worked prolifically, producing a large body of work over his lifetime.
