A landscape depicting tranquil fields bathed in warm summer light. A river flows at the left of the composition while a figure herds sheep in the background. Three figures can be seen resting beside a path at the right of the foreground. Signed to the lower-right edge. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some mild cockling to the substrate.

Artist Biography

John Fullwood (1854-1931) was a painter and etcher born in Wolverhampton. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art and in Newlyn and in France. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and was elected a member of both in 1891. Fullwood is also recorded as an early member of the Birmingham Art Circle. He also showed at the Dudley Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Academy, and Royal Institute of Oil Painters on several occasions as well as in the provinces. Fullwood was both a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and his work is in the collection of Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the New Art Gallery Walsall. His death was recorded at his home in Twickenham, Middlesex.
