A fine mid 19th century watercolour by the British watercolourist John Dobbin. Here he has captured Craigmillar Castle in Scotland, with harvesters resting in the foreground. Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval castle close to Edinburgh, which was built in the late 14th century. In 1660 the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour, Lord President of the Court of Session, who made further alterations. The Gilmours left Craigmillar in the 18th century, and the castle fell into ruin. The castle became a popular tourist attraction from the late 18th century, and was drawn by numerous artists, including Dobbin.
This fine watercolour is well presented in a white mount and gilt frame.
Signed and dated. On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. Minor white mark to the centre of the composition, just to the left of the castle.

John Dobbin (1815-1888) was an English landscape painter. Dobbin travelled extensively in Scotland, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1875. Dobbin's best-known work is the Opening of the Stockton to Darlington Railway, showing Ignatius Bonomi's Skerne Viaduct, portrayed until 2003 on the reverse of Series E £5 notes issued by the Bank of England. Dobbin frequently returned to his hometown, and Darlington features in many of his works. His paintings became more spiritual after the death of his first wife, Amy. His second wife, Hannah Jones, came from an affluent family and probably paid for his Grand Tour of Europe. Dobbin was fairly renowned in his day and enjoyed an audience with Isabella II of Spain, who gave him free rein to paint what he pleased in her country. He died in 1888.
