A wonderful 20th century oil by the British artist John Cherrington (1931-2015). Here Cherrington has used areas thickly applied paint in bright hues to create an interesting and engaging composition. Cherrington was known to sketch the local characters in and around his village, his interest in people and the human form is clearly noted in this portrait. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Overall the condition is good. With very minor areas of scuffing to the corners of the canvas. A very small dent noticeable at the upper right corner.

Artist Biography

John Cherrington was born in 1931. He studied at Hornsea Art College, and moved to Paris at the age of 16 to study art and art history. Cherrington served in the Army for eight years, and afterwards qualified as an art teacher. He taught art in London until moving to Herefordshire in 1977.

Cherrington was a prolific but relatively unknown painter, due to his shyness and unwillingness to put forward his work. Despite this reluctance, many of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters between 1969 and 1974. His wonderful sketches of local characters are full of expression and talent. He produced paintings of bulls for local farmers, and was known to sketch customers in pubs.

Cherrington said his art was “stimulated by the visual world around him, which he found both tormenting and marvellous”.

Cherrington passed away in 2015 in North Wales.
