An expressive portrait of a gentleman in a suit, by the British artist John Cherrington (1931-2015). In a dark green palette, the artist has built facial form and expression in his distinctive style. The warm tones used by Cherrington to prepare the substrate lend the finished article a sense of familiarity. Signed on the reverse.On board.

Condition

In fine condition overall. There is a small loss to the board on the lower right corner, as shown. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Artist Biography

John Cherrington was born in 1931. He studied at Hornsea Art College, and moved to Paris at the age of 16 to study art and art history. Cherrington served in the Army for eight years, and afterwards qualified as an art teacher. He taught art in London until moving to Herefordshire in 1977.

Cherrington was a prolific but relatively unknown painter, due to his shyness and unwillingness to put forward his work. Despite this reluctance, many of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters between 1969 and 1974. His wonderful sketches of local characters are full of expression and talent. He produced paintings of bulls for local farmers, and was known to sketch customers in pubs.

Cherrington said his art was “stimulated by the visual world around him, which he found both tormenting and marvellous”.

Cherrington passed away in 2015 in North Wales.
