A rich and vibrant garden view in acrylic on board, depicting the rear garden of a house with planted flowers and a path, by the British listed artist John Cherrington (1931-2015). While the colour palette is carefully balanced, the use of blue and magenta in the leaves and pathway indicates an influence of the post-impressionist movement. This slight disregard for the naturalistic depiction of colour contributes to this striking and attractive work. Signed and dated '87 to the lower left corner, as shown. On board.

Condition

In fine condition overall, with one small mark to the lower edge. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Artist Biography

John Cherrington was born in 1931. He studied at Hornsea Art College, and moved to Paris at the age of 16 to study art and art history. Cherrington served in the Army for eight years, and afterwards qualified as an art teacher. He taught art in London until moving to Herefordshire in 1977.

Cherrington was a prolific but relatively unknown painter, due to his shyness and unwillingness to put forward his work. Despite this reluctance, many of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters between 1969 and 1974. His wonderful sketches of local characters are full of expression and talent. He produced paintings of bulls for local farmers, and was known to sketch customers in pubs.

Cherrington said his art was “stimulated by the visual world around him, which he found both tormenting and marvellous”.

Cherrington passed away in 2015 in North Wales.
