John Bruce Hurn was a painter known as Bruce Hurn, born in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Hurn studied at Birmingham School of Art, 1942-46 and for many years was Director of Art and Design at King Edwards School and Head of Moseley Branch Art School, Birmingham, H.M. Inspector of Schools 1973-86 and following his retirement relocated to Kent. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his solo exhibitions have been held at the University of Central England, Brunel, Keele, Leicester, Oxford and at Worcester College of Higher Education and also in the Stonegate Gallery, York. He held joint exhibitions with Malcolm Brookes at the RBSA and Midlands Art Centre and exhibited in group shows including Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry, Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, Ludlow Art Gallery, Shrewsbury Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent Art Gallery and Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, also at Snape and Lavenham in Suffolk, and at Bromley and Sevenoaks in Kent.
His teaching career has included appointments at Bournville School of Art and Nuneaton School of Art. Hurn was elected a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1967 he held the office of President from 1973-74. Predominantly a landscape painter in oils and acrylics, he has also shown his work in group exhibitions at the Royal Academy.
