Artist Biography
Born in Ayr, Scotland, Alan Stenhouse Gourley studied at the Glasgow School of Art (1928) and then moved on to Edinburgh College of Art (1929 - 1931) where his teachers included William Gillies. From 1932-37 he lived in South Africa teaching at Johannesburg Technical College. During World War II he was an instructor in camouflage. Gourley was an avid traveller and painted frequently en plein air in Spain, Italy, Morocco, Malta and Singapore. He also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1938-40) and the Slade School of Art (1945) where his teachers included Randolph Schwabe. He exhibited mainly at Mall Galleries and was elected president of ROI in 1964.
