A charming early 20th Century (c.1940) scene in oil, showing an Impressionistic view of Tom Tower in Oxford, from the verdant Merton Meadows. The artist has wonderfully captured the vibrant tones of the Summer's day and filled the scene with movement using gestural and confident brushwork. The painting is unsigned, and was acquired by Sulis Fine Art in a portfolio with two other signed and inscribed works by the artist and fits the style, age, location and palette of the artist's other works. The painting has been presented in a contemporary gilt effect frame. On canvas board.

Condition

In remarkably good condition given its age. Only very minor surface dirt.

Artist Biography

Painter who was educated at Cambridge University, then studied at Westminster School of Art, 1926–9, with Walter Bayes. Showed at RBA, RCamA, Paris Salon and Lincolnshire Artists’ Society, sometimes just signing work J B. Lincoln’s Usher Gallery holds his works: A Break in the Clouds, November Sky and Humberstone Foreshore, all presented by Sir Hickman Bacon in the 1930s. Lived at Grimsby, Lincolnshire
