Description

A lively early nineteenth-century scene by German artist Johann Nepomuk Hofbaur, depicting everyday life within the grounds of a grand country estate. Peasants converse beside their wagon while their horses feed from a trough, as the aristocratic estate owners pass by in an elegant horse-drawn carriage. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right corner and is beautifully presented in a gilt frame with ornate oak leaf and lamb's tongue running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure throughout. The canvas has been previously relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Scuffs and small losses to the frame, as well as some areas of repainting. Overall, the artwork remains in good condition for its age.
