A fine example of 18th-century Baroque painting depicting the wrestling match between Jacob and the angel, one of the most enigmatic episodes in the Old Testament. After a long journey, Jacob was left alone by the river Jabbok, where he was met by an angel in human form. Jacob wrestled with this angel until dawn, refusing to yield. During the battle, Jacob recognised the supernatural nature of his opponent and asked him to bless him. At the end of the battle, the angel said to Jacob: 'You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have fought with God and with men and have won'. The name Israel, which Jacob received, was later transferred to his descendants and the people of Israel. The painting is signed lower left. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. Overpainting noted to the background. Light scratches and abrasions to the perimeter of the composition. Small indentations to the canvas. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
