Arguably one of his largest and most impressive engravings, this fine strike of 'Musiciens Ambulans' by the German-born engraver Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) retains the delineated textures of the original 1764 printing. We believe this work to be a later 18th Century strike, due to the quality of the wove paper, as the original was printed on laid.
Inscribed to the lower margin with the title, dedications and signed in plate to the lower right.
On wove laid to thin card.In very good condition overall for a picture of this age. Some light even surface discolouration, with a small closed tear to the left edge and small loss to the lower margin. Trimmed within the plate lines.

One of the most eminent engravers of the eighteenth century, Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) learned to engrave as a youthful apprentice to a gunmaker. His talents were soon recognised and in 1736 he was sent to Paris to engrave some plates after Rigaud. Most of Wille's early work was in the genre of portrait engraving. By 1750, however, he had established himself as a leading engraver of historical and genre subjects, particularly after the designs of contemporary Dutch and German painters. During his career he was awarded the lucrative titles of Engraver to the King of France, Engraver to the Emperor of Germany and Engraver to the King of Denmark. He was elected an Academician of the French Academy in 1761 and was also a member of the Academies of Dresden, Berlin, Augsburg, Vienna and Rouen.
