Jim Russell was born in Walsall, Staffordshire and was a painter, illustrator and draughtsman. He studies at Birmingham School of Art and went on to teach at Central St Martins from 1960. He also illustrated for major institutions such as the BBC and magazines such as The Radio Times and Punch.
Russell was a member of RBA and showed at RA from 1959. He also showed at at NEAC, RI, Cleveland Drawing Biennale and John Moores Liverpool Exhibition. In 1970 he gained the Lord Mayor’s Art Award.
His solo exhibitions include a show at William Ware Gallery, 1967–9; from 1978 regularly at Amalgam, Barnes, Nuffield Centre, Southampton, 1993; and Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, 1994.
