Jean Alexander - Original 1950 Watercolour. Watercolour and gouache. Inscribed and dated on the reverse. Provenance: the artist's family. Signed. On laid. In fine condition.Born in 1911 at Priest’s Cottage, Shenfield, Essex, Jean Dryden Alexander’s artistic influence stemmed from her parents, the noted watercolourists R.G.D Alexander and Effie Alexander. Their artist circle of friends included Mark Fisher, H.B. Brabazon and Sir George Clausen. The whole family spent as much time as possible painting rapid impressions en plein air around Essex, Suffolk and its coastline. Alexander returned to Essex in 1936 to take up a teaching post at Brentwood County High School, becoming head of the art department until her retirement in 1970. From 1970 to 1974 she lived in New Zealand for and in 1974 she moved to Norfolk where she lived until her death in 1994.
