Description

A dramatic study by the Polish-American artist Jan Hiller, possibly depicting the siege of Warsaw in September 1939. The scene is an explosion of action and chaos, soldiers fire from behind a barricade while a cavalry helplessly charges at German tanks. One soldier is about to launch a grenade while a tender moment between a nurse and her patient is captured in the foreground. Signed and dated to the lower right. On watercolour paper laid to card.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good. There is some minor discolouration and light mount burn to the upper edge of the paper.

Artist Biography

Hiller was a painter, printmaker and teacher, born in London of Polish American parentage. He studied at Hornsey School of Art with John Moody and Herbert Budd, 1935-39, then again in 1946-47 following active service in WWII. Hiller was Head of Art at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Evesham, Worcestershire, where he lived, showing at the RI and the SGA, of which he was a member and at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, who hold examples of his work.
