Jan Sadeler I (1550-1600) was part of the largest and most successful family dynasty of Flemish engravers, dominant in Northern Europe throughout the 16th and 17th Centuries.
Born in Flemish Brabant near Brussels, Jan was in Antwerp by 1572, a centre of printmaking at the time. After becoming a master of the artist's Guild of Saint Luke and marrying in Antwerp Cathedral, he began to work for the publisher Christophe Plantin (1520-1589). Later, he worked in Germany and Italy alongside his younger brother Raphael Sadeler I.
