Artist Biography

Jan Clutterbuck (1919-2010) was an artist and teacher, born Janette Corbett Diefendorf in Newton, Massachusetts, United States of America. During World War II she served with the American Red Cross in Europe and met her future husband in Ireland, where he was serving with the Lovett Scouts in Donegal. She studied printmaking with Michael Carlo at Harrow School of Art and with Michael Rothenstein but was largely self-taught.

Among her teaching experiences were work at Cassio College, Watford, and summer courses for Cambridge Drawing Society, as well as watercolour workshops in Sarratt, Hertfordshire, where she lived. She was chairman of Women's International Art Club, 1965-75. She also exhibited at the Drian Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions, American Embassy, Hurlingham Gallery and elsewhere. The Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry, and Gloucester Education Committees hold her work. She died in Sarratt, Hertfordshire.
