Born in Leicester, Winterbottom excelled at sports and even declined an offer to play professional football for Leicester City and instead enrolled at Leicester School of Art. During the 1960's he left his teaching job in Harrogate School of Art and took a post at Farnham Art College where he became head of the Fine Art Department, retiring in 1986. Winterbottom exhibited at Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and examples of his work are in the collections of Mercer Art Gallery. During the 1980's he established the Surrey Heath Arts Council and was pivotal in securing funding for the Surrey Heath Arts Festival, still running each year. He also helped to set up the Surrey Heath Bursary Fund for young artists which has been renamed in his honour.
