A very fine and substantial watercolour with body color by the listed artist James Vivien de Fleury (1847-1902), entitled 'Whitecliff Bay, Isle of Wight' off the South coast of England. A group of figures are shown collecting oysters or clams on the shore with wicker baskets, while a distant fisherwoman traverses the rocks. The composition is dominated by the large looming cliff face, adding dramatic scale and a coastal mood to the setting. Precise and meticulous brushwork is typical in the work of de Fleury, as well as the picturesque qualities of light.
Well-presented in a washline and gilt detail mount, and gilt wooden frame, as shown. With a label to the reverse from the Finchley Fine Art Galleries.
Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.In good condition overall. Discolouration to the paper, with very light spots of discolouration near the lower left edge. The frame is in very good condition, with only minor wear.
