Painter, illustrator, printmaker, and teacher James Thomas Armour Osborne (1907-1979) was born at Battle, East Sussex. He studied at Hastings Art School, and then the Royal College of Art. While there he entered for and won the coveted Prix de Rome, which allowed him to spend two years studying in Italy and Greece. He taught at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art for some years before and after World War II, having also been on the staff at Hastings School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and New English Art Club. A retrospective exhibition was held in 1987 at the Guildhall Art Gallery, London. In 2014 another exhibition was held at the Burton Art Gallery in Devon. He was married to the sculptor Charlotte Gibson.
