Artist Biography
James Isaiah Lewis (1860-1934) was a prominent watercolourist during the Victorian era, specialising in views of Richmond and the Surrey countryside. He was born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, and received his artistic training at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. There he absorbed the Beaux Arts aesthetic championed by the Royal Academy – a style characterised by idealised beauty and formal composition. Lewis frequently painted en plein air, with a focus on realism. His canvases frequently portray iconic locations such as Kew Gardens and Richmond Hill.
