Description

An engraving with hand colouring depicting a view of Oxford from the countryside with cows and a horse grazing in the foreground. Presented glazed in a pale blue mount with gold detailing and a distressed brown, red, and gilt-effect wooden frame with strapwork carving. Inscribed with the title, date, publication information, and the name of the artist in plate. On laid.

Condition

There is some discolouration and some surface marks and creases to the substrate. There is a closed tear at the centre of the right edge measuring 1.4cm. There are some scuffs and chips at the corners of the frame.

Artist Biography

James Green (1729-1759) was an engraver who was apprenticed to Isaac Basire (1704-1768) in 1742 and worked in Oxford. In 1756 he succeeded Vertue as engraver to the University and in 1757 to the Society of Antiquaries. He died young only two years later and his place was taken by his brother Benjamin Green (1736-1798).
