James George Bingley (1840-1920) was a painter, born in Westminster, London. Although he visited Italy to paint in the Florence area, most of his work was carried out in the south-west of England. Bingley's wife Elizabeth Mary was Cornish and the Bingleys often visited her old home. Their daughter Helen was born at Newlyn in 1875. In 1883 the Bingleys moved to Midhurst in Sussex where Bingley painted many landscapes of the surrounding countryside. Bingley was a great admirer of the artist Frederick Walker and some of his copies of Frederick Walker’s watercolours are in the Leggatt Collection, now housed in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. He exhibited at the RA, RBA, RI, and ROI.
