James Dring (1905-1985) was a British painter who worked in oil and watercolour. Born in London, he trained at the Clapham School of Art (1920-27) and later at the Royal College of Art under Sir William Rothenstein. Dring exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Wertheim Gallery, and in numerous provincial and international venues in Paris, Brussels, Sweden, and the United States. His work was acquired by the Contemporary Art Society and reproduced by the Medici Society. Examples of his paintings are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Southampton Art Gallery, and the museums of Brussels and Mons. From 1943 to 1972, Dring taught at St Martin’s School of Art. He was the younger brother of the painter William Dring.
