There is some mild foxing and discolouration, including a blue spot to the left of the tower. There have been some small restorations to the moulding on the frame. Overall in good condition.

James Henry Charles (1851-1906) was a painter born in Warrington. He left Warrington and settled in Chelsea early in life and first studied at Heatherley's and later at the RA Schools from 1872. He traveled to France to further his studies and spent two years at the Academie Julian in Paris. He was a medal winner at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889 and at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Charles lived for some time near Chichester and towards the end of his life visited Italy. He exhibited at the RA and at the New English Art Club and was known for his landscapes and successful portraits.
Works by James Charles were shown in the RA Old Masters Exhibition in 1907 and many others were viewed and sold at the Leicester Galleries, London, in the same year. His work is currently held by the V&A, Tate Galleries, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, National Museum Wales, Warrington Museum and Art Gallery, and in international collections including Johannesburg, South Africa, and Melbourne and Perth, Australia.
