Painter of landscapes often containing animals. Born in Camberwell, London the son of Henry Aumonier a jeweller and a brother to artist Louisa Aumonier. His early employment was as a designer in a textile firm and he began to paint landscapes about 1862, exhibiting at the principal London galleries from 1864. His first solo exhibition was of watercolours, held at the Leicester Galleries in 1908.
James was the most prolific of the extended family and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1879, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1909 and New English Art Club in 1887. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell, Fine Art Society, Grosvenor Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Leicester Galleries, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, and Arthur Tooth & Sons.
