Artist Biography

Jacques Daniel was a French painter, designer, illustrator, and art director, born in Les Andelys. He trained from the mid-1930s at the École des Arts Appliqués, the École Estienne, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. A formative encounter came in 1937, when he met the collector and art critic Wilhelm Uhde, who encouraged him to paint and through whom he discovered the work of Louis Vivin, Georges Braque, and others. He began working in publishing around 1938. During the Second World War, Daniel took part in the French Resistance. During the Paris uprising of August 1944, helped by his younger brother Michel, an apprentice lithographer, he produced a poster calling on Parisians to rise against the German troops. After the war, at the urging of Pierre Faucheux, he became a highly regarded art director and layout designer. He worked across graphic design more broadly. He is also credited as the creator of the Carrefour supermarket logo, made in 1966 in collaboration with Étienne Thil. As a painter, he exhibited regularly from around 1949 onward. That year he showed at the "Hommage à Wilhelm Uhde" exhibition at the Galerie Denise René, alongside Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Séraphine de Senlis, and others, and he went on to hold solo exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Cannes, Naples, and elsewhere through the following decades.
