Jack Coutu A.R.E.,A.R.C.A. 1964 Signed Embossed collograph Red Monolith. Raymond John Coutu, English, born 1924. The Red Monolith is arguably Coutu's finest work. Heavily embossed and with a thick 3-dimensional application of pigment. In superb original condition. Pencil inscribed, numbered 45/50 and signed. Jack Coutu is influenced by Oriental art and inspired by English stories and legends, and by the observation of the flora and fauna in his garden, in fields, hedgerows and ponds. A trained sculptor and engraver, he often includes small gears and mechanalia in his intricate prints. His technical skill is not limited to etching, he created a large collection of hand carved Japanese Netsuke, he also taught engraving and print-making at the Central School of Art, London. Education: (1947-1957) Farnam School of Art ; Royal College of Art ; Central School of Art, all in UK. Exhibitions: Continual group and one person exhibitions throughout UK and Europe since 1965. Collections: including: King Gustave (Sweden); Museum of Fine Arts (Boston); Bradford City Art Gallery; Victoria and Albert Museum, Government Art Collection, Art Gallery of NSW; many provincial galleries.
