J. Grant - Fine 19th Century Pastel A Storm Brewing
Description
A very fine and atmospheric 19th Century seascape in pastel with graphite details, by the artist J. Grant. Several seafaring vessels are depicted in stormy waters, with looming clouds and billowing sails. A subtle play of light on the surface of the waves is suggestive of the struggle for sunlight, and the dark unknown of the expansive seas.
The artist has a clear proficiency for the medium, with delicate layered pastel work, contrasting with fine lined graphite details. The overall setting exudes drama and movement. Well-presented in a dark oak frame with inner gilt beading, as shown.
