J. Gould & W. Hart - Fine Original Early 19th Century Lithograph. A beautiful hand coloured lithograph of White-back woodpeckers. With a decorative washline mount and in a grey and silver frame. Printed by Walter, Imp. With text about the Picus Leuconotus attached to the back of the frame. Signed in plate. On wove. Discolouration to edges of page and some minor foxing. But otherwise in good condition.John Gould was a self-taught English naturalist, a gifted artist and a talented taxidermist. A man of vision with a talent for organization and administration, he founded an empire for ornithological illustration, publishing more than forty large folio volumes. These works contained over 3,000 plates, all superbly drawn and meticulously hand coloured. The first work appeared in 1831 and the last in 1888, seven years after Gould's death.
