The condition is typical for a picture of this age. Some light surface abrasion and discolouration, mainly around the edges. Light creases to the upper right corner. There are two small paint losses near the eyes.

J.C.A. Marston was a mid 19th Century watercolourist with a remarkably dynamic approach to form and palette, seemingly far ahead of the prevalent styles of the period. Shunning traditional artistic endeavours, Marston crafted highly illustrative, almost theatrical settings, with a focus on light, shadow and depth. His work includes architectural studies, genre scenes, portraiture, river settings and the natural world. Evidently well-travelled, his work depicts Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.
