Description

A remarkable nineteenth-century portrait of a clergyman, depicted wearing a white cassock beneath a blue mantelletta, with a white stole embroidered with gold floral designs. Behind the sitter, a bookshelf alludes to his intelligence and knowledge of theology. He holds a piece of paper bearing the inscription "Al Molto Ill.e e Rdo Sig. / Il Sig: D. Felice Arcip.te Maest... / Rotondi," translating as "To the Most Illustrious and Reverend Mr. / Mr. D. Felice Archpriest and Master / Rotondi." This may identify the sitter as "D. Felice," a reverend or archpriest, while "Rotondi" may refer to the artist. Dated on the reverse of the canvas. The artwork is well presented in an antique gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Craquelure, scratches, and dirtying to the surface throughout. Areas of overpainting. Marks, scuffs, and small losses to the frame.
