Landscape and portrait painter mainly in watercolours born in the heart of the Potteries in Etruria. John Barlow was at first not unsurprisingly employed as a ceramics painter for Mintons before moving to Kendal in the Lake District. There during the period 1914-31, he was a member of the Lake Artists Society. He later relocated to Suffolk and showed with the Ipswich Art Club and also at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Academy of Arts. Examples of his work are in the collection of Ipswich Art Gallery. It seems probable that he suffered from bipolar affective disorder, a mental illness and he died whilst a patient at The Retreat, a Quaker psychiatric hospital at York in 1949, aged 86.
