The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and general dirtying to the painting's surface. There is a crease to the top left corner and a loss at the lower left corner as well as several minor losses to the paint at the upper and lower edges. The artist's signature in the lower right has the last letter cropped off.

Hugh Church was a London artist born in Haggerston in 1865. He attended St. Saviour's School, Ardingly Sussex. Church married a Jane Helene Wilson in 1892 but she died some time prior to 1901 when he was living at 75 Albert Mansions, South Lambeth and is described as a painter and sculptor. They had a daughter Annie Helene Church born about 1893.
